Another big comeback is in the works! Sébastien Loeb will return to the WRC for the fourth time this season, this time for fans to see him in the Acropolis Rally in Greece. The French legend has historically been very successful at this event. So why has he decided to return to this particular rally?
The world rallying icon has decided to return to the WRC this season, but only in partial events, so the 48-year-old will not take part in the entire World Rally Championship.
After competing in Monte-Carlo, Portugal and Kenya, Loeb will return to WRC soil in the tenth round of the 2022 season – the Acropolis Rally Greece. This rally will take place in September, specifically from 8 to 11 (Thursday to Sunday – ed.).
Loeb is currently eighth in the drivers’ championship with 35 points ahead of another legend, Sébastien Ogier. He has 34 points.
He dominated the opening round of the season in Monte-Carlo, but did not compete in the following events in Sweden and Croatia. Unfortunately, he crashed in the first few metres of the Portuguese rally, and his second event of the season ended quickly.
In Kenya, he was even the leading man in this sixth event of the 2022 season, but then his engine failed and he ended up finishing eighth overall.
So his next destination will be the Rally of Greece, where Loeb has historically been a very successful driver. He is a three-time winner, having dominated the Acropolis Rally Greece in Citroen colours in 2005, 2008 and 2012.
Loeb’s statement
“I decided to return to Greece because it’s a nice gravel rally that I’ve always enjoyed. It looks better now and is not as rough as the last time I did it,” explains Loeb, quoted by Motorsport.
“I think there are only two stages on this year’s itinerary that I have experienced. But that was 10 years ago, so I don’t remember them. I’ll have to start from scratch, which is always complicated. I think from this year onwards there will be a lot of new stages for everyone,” he adds.
“It’s not an easy rally, but it’s nice to race here, so I’m looking forward to it. At the moment it’s hard to set my goals here, I’ll try to prepare as well as I can for this rally. I hope I can get into a rhythm in Greece like I did in Portugal and Kenya,” he concluded.
Loeb will thus form an extended line-up for the M-Sport Ford team. The team will have six cars in Greece. In addition to Loeb, Craig Breen, Gus Greensmith, Adrien Formaux, Pierre-Louis Loubet and Jourdan Serderidis are also ready.
