Ukraine’s star boxers of today Oleksandr Usyk and Vasyl Lomachenko have refused their country’s permission to leave the ranks of the Ukrainian army to prepare for their title fights in boxing. The reason is the desire to fight for their nation.

Ukrainian contemporary boxing stars Usyk and Lomachenko fight against Russia

When we recently informed you that star Ukrainian boxer Oleksandr Usyk had enlisted in the army and was fighting against the Russian invasion of Ukraine, it was widely expected that after a while he would leave Ukraine and start training for a title rematch with Anthony Joshua.

Usyk, who joined the territorial defense after the Russian invasion, like his colleague Lomachenko, was given permission by the national sports minister to leave the country despite the ongoing war. But under current law, Usyk could leave at any time for the sake of his young children.

Usyk’s rematch with Joshua is unlikely to happen

Earlier this week, according to The Sun, promoter Eddie Hearn said that two-weight world champion and unbeaten Oleksandr Usyk would face Joshua despite his duties with the Ukrainian army. The latter was dethroned by the WBA, WBO, IBF and IBO last September.

But after his fellow boxer Vasyl Lomachenko, who fights alongside Usyk for his native country, refused to leave the army to prepare for his own title fight with George Kambosos, the cards were shuffled. “Now that Lomachenko has stayed in Ukraine, it’s more likely that Usyk will stay as well, ” Hearn confirmed speculation on Wednesday night that a rematch with Joshua, which was due to take place this June, was unlikely to happen after all , according to The Sun.

Lomachenko’s manager has already confirmed that his charge will not enter the title fight

Vasyl Lomachenko, who faced the same dilemma, has already decided to stay in the fight against Russian superiority. The former two-time lightweight title holder had already confirmed a title fight in which he could try to regain his lost titles. However, he did not take advantage of the Ukrainian government’s exemption.

Lomachenko’s manager, Egis Klimas, was supposed to confirm to promoter Lou DiBella earlier this week that the Ukrainian fighter would not enter his title fight. “Egis confirmed to us today that he will stay in Ukraine, and that is commendable,” DiBella confirmed the cancellation of the fight , according to The Sun. “We believe the fight he is fighting is much bigger than boxing and our thoughts and prayers are with him, his family and the people of Ukraine,” he added.
