Denmark knocked out the Czech Republic in the quarter-finals of the European Championship and will play England in the final. In an interview after the final whistle, their coach Kasper Hjulmand praised not only his players but also Jaroslav Šilhavy’s.
Few expected the Danish coach to praise his opponent at the start of the interview after progressing to the semi-finals. But Kasper Hjulmand showed why he is considered to be a great sympathizer.
“First of all, my hat is off to the Czech Republic. We played the way we wanted to, especially at the beginning, but in the second half our opponent worried us and got into the game. A dignified and honest performance. They have my admiration!”
He then, of course, praised his charges, especially for their work in standard situations. Not only did they not score from any of the Czech ones, but they also struck from one of them themselves.
“I am proud of my players. We have played two games now in which we won comfortably, against the Czech Republic it was close, but also with a win. We knew that the Czechs are great from the standards, so I’m even more happy that we scored the goal from it.”
He didn’t forget the Danish fans, who were in the stands in their hundreds and helped the team to advance with their constant cheering. They went to support their country even though the game was played in far away Baku.
“Thank you all for your support. We are happy that we could repay the fans. I know they will celebrate a lot today.”
The Danes have already achieved their tournament goal thanks to their progression to the semi-finals, and they are mainly looking to enjoy the match against England. But winning the whole Euro is of course a huge motivation as they would be emulating their countrymen from 1992.
“To go as far as possible. Our journey is already incredible, we are proud to be in the semi-finals and to follow in the footsteps of those who won the Euros in 1992. That makes us happy,” concluded Hjulmand.
