Group A
Bologna’s Group A was dominated by the home team Italy, who managed to win all three encounters. Matteo Berrettini, Jannik Sinner, Lorenzo Musetti and the doubles players Simone Bolelli and Fabio Fognini were the winners.
The second place was taken by Croatia, which was decided in the final doubles match against Sweden. The foursome of Borna Ćorić, Borna Gojo, Nikola Mektić and Mate Pavić goes on at the expense of the Swedes and Argentines. The South American qualifying overcomers of the Czech team did not add any points to the table.
Group B
Valencia was the scene of the most balanced of all the groups. Spain, Canada and Serbia all won their two duels, so the overall score was determined by the individual matches. With seven wins, the home team eventually took the top spot, helped by new world number one Carlos Alcaraz. The representatives of the Maple Leaf country were also promoted with five wins.
On the other hand, the Serbian team, which did not include the star Novak Djokovic, was not able to win 4::5. South Korea finished last without a single triumph and with only two matches won.
Group C
The Germans took full advantage of their home environment. In Group C in Hamburg, they took on all three of their competitors in the battle for promotion. They were complemented by the Australians on their way to the quarter-finals.
The defeat of the French team, secured by Matthew Ebden and Max Purcell in the deciding doubles, was crucial for the opposition. They won against the pair of Nicolas Mahut, Arthur Rinderknech twice 6::4. The Belgians finished last.
Group D
Great Britain failed to qualify in Glasgow, Scotland. Andy Murray represented the island country in the Davis Cup for the first time in three years. The experienced tennis player together with Joe Salisbury lost the doubles match against the Americans Rajeev Ram and Jack Sock after sets 7::5, 4::6 and 5::7, which was decisive in the final result.
The Netherlands fared even better than the USA. Thanks to Tallon Griekspoor, Botic van de Zandschulp, Wesley Koolhof and Matwe Middelkooppvi, the team from the land of tulips dominated all three of their encounters. At the other end of the table was Kazakhstan.
