The great Siniakova advanced to the 3rd round of Roland Garros! Krejcikova knocked out Strycova
It seemed that 2020 would not be the year that Kateřina Siniaková would remember fondly. However, she has been performing well at Roland Garros so far and is already in the 3rd round. In the derby between two of her compatriots, Barbora Krejcikova defeated her namesake Strycova.
It seemed that 2020 would not be the year that Kateřina Siniaková would remember fondly. However, she has been performing well at Roland Garros so far and is already in the 3rd round. In the derby between two of her compatriots, Barbora Krejcikova defeated her namesake Strycova.
Three tennis players from the Czech Republic were on the tennis courts during Wednesday’s singles programme. Unfortunately, in one match two of them faced each other.
Twenty-four-year-old Barbora Krejcikova challenged her more experienced compatriot Strycova shortly before 12 o’clock, with the latter being the favourite. Not to be outdone, she is the 37th player in the WTA rankings, while Krejcikova is up to 117th.
However, Krejcikova, a native of Brno, managed to beat her more experienced colleague. In a three-set battle, she reached her first progression to the third round of a Grand Slam tournament after 2 hours and 43 minutes. She won the first set 6:4, lost the second set 3:6 and the decisive third set ended 6:3. For the first time in her career she should move into the top 100 of the WTA rankings.
It was after 2 p.m. that Katerina Siniakova also took the court. Like Krejcikova, she did not go into the match as a favourite. Against her stood the 38th player of the world Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova, with whom she had a negative mutual balance (3::0).
However, the native of Hradec Kralove has been showing fantastic performances at Roland Garros and confirmed it against the Russian, who is 24th in the WTA rankings. She blew her away in one hour and 18 minutes and only needed two sets to do it. She won the first 6:3, the second 6:4.
But she has a big test in the next round. She will face Kiki Bertens, the eighth player in the WTA rankings. The two players have already faced each other twice, once Siniakova won 2:0 and once Bertens won identically. Krejcikova will face Tsvetana Pironkova, who is 40 places lower in the rankings.
