Despite the original plan, Formula 1 will run “only” twenty-two races this season, with the ninth event of 2022 being the Canadian Grand Prix (Formula 1 AWS Grand Prix Du Canada). So what is the schedule and where can you follow the entire race weekend?
The first Canadian Grand Prix was held back in 1967 and was won by Jack Brabham. However, it wasn’t until the 1978 season that the Canadian event moved to Montreal, having previously hosted Formula 1 races at Mosport Park in Bowmanville and Le Circuit Mont-Tremblant in Québec.
The inaugural Grand Prix at the new venue was dominated by Canadian driver Gilles Villeneuve in front of 70,000 spectators, and as we all know today, the circuit still bears his name today.
Villeneuve remains the only Canadian to win a domestic Grand Prix. This is an achievement that continues to this day. Michael Schumacher and Lewis Hamilton (7) have won the most Canadian Grand Prix victories.
As far as teams and races in the Formula One World Championship are concerned, McLaren has won the most times in Canada. Thirteen times. Ferrari has twelve victories, and the Williams team has won the Canadian Grand Prix seven times. Mercedes has only four wins, Red Bull two.
Circuit Gilles-Villeneuve
The track itself is 4.361km long and consists of fourteen corners. Circuit Gilles-Villeneuve, as the official name of the circuit is, offers three DRS zones, on the straight between turns 7 and 8, 12 and 13 and on the finishing straight.
Detection points can then be found at the entrance to Turn 6 and at the exit of Turn 9. The Formula 1 Canadian Grand Prix is a standard 70-lap race, during which the drivers will cover just under 306 kilometres.
But in addition to the detection points, you can also see the average speeds that the drivers reach at each corner, as well as what gear they usually shift into at that corner.
Canadian Grand Prix – programme
The Formula 1 cars will take to the track for the first time on Friday, June 17, at 20:00, as part of the first practice session (officially called Free Practice 1 – ed.). This will last the standard one hour.
FP2 will start at 23:00 on the same day. The third and final free practice is scheduled for Saturday, 18 June, from 19:00 to 20:00.
At the stroke of 8pm, drivers and teams will qualify for Sunday’s Grand Prix, which F1 has scheduled to start at 20:00.
Canadian Grand Prix – stream
Live coverage of the Formula 1 races can be watched on Sport 1 and Sport 2. There will also be internet streams and, last but not least, F1 TV, where you can also switch the onboard cameras of individual drivers.
But F1 TV in particular also offers other features, namely livetiming and detailed telemetry. In addition to the full F1 programme, you can also watch press conferences or Formula 2 or Formula 3 practice and qualifying sessions.
Canadian Grand Prix – odds
The odds for the Saudi Grand Prix can be found here.
In the seventh race of the season in Baku, the Red Bull team scored its third double of the season, with Max Verstappen taking the win, accompanied on the podium by his teammate Sergio Pérez and Mercedes driver George Russell.
Despite another qualifying victory, Ferrari was unable to convert this great result into a win. However, the Italian stable is preparing aerodynamic improvements for the Canadian Grand Prix, so can Charles Leclerc finally break Red Bull’s winning streak?
