In addition to the ongoing dispute between Karim Benzema and Mathieu Valbuena, another issue has been brought to the public. This time, however, it concerns the former Juventus Turin striker, who is to serve up to 3 and a half years behind bars.

He will be well known to fans thanks to his involvement in Italy, where he was mainly with Juventus Turin, Palermo and Fiorentina.

Fabrizio Miccoli was first investigated for his links to the mafia back in 2013, but was only convicted in 2017. Miccoli subsequently appealed, but this was recently swept off the table by the Court of Appeal in Palermo, whereupon the Supreme Court upheld his sentence of three and a half years imprisonment.

The former Italian international has to go to prison for extortion. According to investigators, Miccoli instructed Mauro Lauricello, the son of Sicilian mafia boss Antonino Lauricello, to force nightclub owner Andrea Graffagnini to repay a debt.

The debt is said to be 12,000 euros, or 300,000 in Czech crowns.

Miccoli was not helped in court by the fact that in a monitored wiretap he referred to prominent anti-mafia judge Giovanni Falcone as a “dirtbag”.

He started his football career with AC Milan’s youth team, but then moved on to several clubs – Casarano, Ternana, Perugia, Juventus, Fiorentina, Palermo and Lecce. Outside of Italy, he also played for Benfica Lisbon and Birkirkara.

He then ended his active career at the Maltese club in 2015. He played 259 games in the Italian league, scoring 103 goals. It was with Juventus and Benfica that he also played in the Champions League.
