In the match between France and Hungary, three points were expected for the big favourite. However, the latter lost sensationally, unable to get up to speed with the tenacious Hungarians and only drew 1-1.
In the match between France and Hungary, three points were expected for the big favourite. But the latter lost sensationally, unable to get up to speed with the tenacious Hungarians and only drew 1:1.
France overcame Germany 1: 0 in the first match, so they only needed to beat Hungary or even draw to be sure of progressing from the group of death. The home team still wanted to try for a miracle after losing 0:3 to Portugal.
France, aware of its position as the clear favourite, played the first half with the belief that nothing could happen. However, thanks to their great quality, they created a few chances. In the 14th minute, Mbappé played the ball to Benzema, who shot from the edge of the box towards the bar, but goalkeeper Gulacsi only cleared the ball to Griezmann, who failed to finish.
Two minutes later, Mbappé headed in after a Digne centre, but it was just wide. In the 31st minute came the third and biggest chance for the French. Mbappé found Benzema in the whitewash with a beautiful cross, who shot just wide of the bar from the penalty spot.
The reigning world champions spurned their chances and from the second half of the first half played more in a saving mode. However, the Hungarians took advantage of this, shocking the entire home stadium in the second minute of the first half.
Roland Sallai extended to Attila Fiola, who reached the French penalty area and beat Hugo Lloris. At half-time, the score was surprisingly 1-0 to Hungary.
In the second half, the Hungarians locked themselves in their own half, the French vainly conquering the defensive wall. In the 57th minute Rabiot was replaced by Dembelé, who came on a minute later. He hooked a sliding Sallai and Fiola and rang the bar of Gulacs’ goal with his right foot.
Didier Deschamps’ charges managed to break the Hungarian defence only in the 66th minute. A long Hugo Lloris cross was picked out by Kylian Mbappé, snuck down the right side and into the box where Antoine Griezmann scored.
In the 81st minute, Mbappé had the chance to decide the game. After a cross from Giroud, he found himself alone in front of Gulacsi, but he parried his shot with his left foot.
That was all the French could do and they drew 1-1 with Hungary. Hungary are still sensationally hoping to qualify, but they would have to beat Germany in their last match.
