The incredible performances of the ATP debutant Jiri Lehecka will push the Czech youngster into the top 100. At the same time, the Czech number one will change in the rankings for the second time in a short time. Lehečka will surpass Tomáš Macháč.
In Rotterdam, the Netherlands, the native of Mladá Boleslav has so far recorded several scalps of Top 100 players. Last time, another promising tennis player, Italian Lorenzo Musetti (63rd), made it to the quarterfinals. In the opening set, Lehečka did not give his opponent many chances and calmly guarded his own serve.
However, he struggled a lot in the second set, winning only one game. The suffering continued in the decisive third set until the score was 0-2. Lehecka took advantage of the Italian’s errors and was 100 percent on his own serve by the end of the match.
Lehecka won in three sets 6-3, 1-6, 7-5 and advanced to the semifinals of the ATP tournament. Stefanos Tsitsipas of Greece reached the semifinals after defeating Australian De Minaur 6-4, 6-4.
Lehecka became the lowest-ranked semifinalist in Rotterdam since 1995. In an amazing campaign, the Czech player managed to get through the qualification in which he first defeated the home player De Jong (202nd) and the Frenchman Moutet (106th).
Subsequently, in the main stage of the tournament, he defeated the world 12. Denis Shapovalov, followed by home favourite Botice van de Zandschulp (51st) and last mentioned Musetti (63rd).
