The fight for the title and for the retention! What is Serie A like?

There are only two rounds left in the Italian league. But the winner is still to be decided. For now, AC Milan lead the table with a two-point lead over city rival Inter.

Inter have an easier draw, as they will play on Sunday in Sicily against the disappointment of this Serie A season, Cagliari, who are still in eighteenth place, ensuring relegation to Serie B. A week later, Inter will host Genoa’s Sampdoria. The latter is in fifteenth position, but only four points above the relegation places.

AC Milan will host the erratic Bergamo on Sunday. The latter is in eighth place, but it does not lose a point to AS Rome, which is still in position for the European Conference. They will play their last game of the season at the Mapei Stadium against Sassuolo at home, who have not been doing well in recent games.

Until the last moment, it looked like SSC Napoli would also make it to the final stage. The latter, due to a three-match winless streak in April and the favourites’ failure to falter, has lost the chance to win the league title it has not won for 32 years. The last time it managed to win the Scudetto under Vesuvius was during the time of Diego Maradona.

Three teams are relegated from Italy’s top competition, with Venice, FC Genoa, Cagliari, Salernitana or Sampdoria Genoa all likely to be relegated with two rounds to go. Venice are in last place, but still have a theoretical chance of staying up.

It will be very interesting to see how the situation at the tail of the table turns out. The Italian Serie A remains the only one of the top five leagues in which there is no known relegation or league winner.
