For Barcelona fans, it would be a huge blow indeed. For perhaps the first time, the Catalan club’s management has admitted that it could lose Messi. This is despite both sides wanting to agree a contract extension.
Lionel Messi is a free agent. The Argentine footballer’s contract at Barcelona expired in the last few hours. And the club is working hard to extend it.
However, there is one hitch. Both sides really want to agree to continue working together, but unfortunately there is one non-football thing that prevents the agreement.
It’s the Financial Fair Play rule. According to the latest information, a new two-year contract should already be on the table, but it is this rule that is preventing its conclusion.
“I would like to announce his stay at Barcelona, however, at the moment we cannot promise anything. We are in the process of finding the best option for both parties,” Barcelona president Laporta said regarding Messi.
He also said that the Argentine himself would like to stay at the club. “Messi wants to stay here, unfortunately I am referring to the financial fair play rule. We want to find an acceptable option for both parties,” Laporta also said.
