There are three possible scenarios for the future of Sergio Busquets. Leaving when his contract expires in June 2023, leaving in January or extending his contract for six months and leaving in January next year.
Sergio Busquets announced the end of his national team career a few days ago. However, the captain of the Barcelona team must soon make another very important decision regarding his future at the club.
the 34-year-old midfielder’s contract expires in June 2023. The original plan was to fulfil this contract and say goodbye at the end of the season.
However, the media reports that coach Xavi Hernández insists that Sergio stays at the club, which has raised some doubts in the captain, who even considered leaving in January.
Currently, three scenarios are on the table. Firstly, and most likely, everything could go in the direction originally set out. Busquets fulfills his contract and says goodbye to the club of his life in June 2023.
Xavi would be happy about this opportunity, as he still considers his former teammate as one of the key players for his vision of the game.
Secondly, Busquets could leave for Inter Miami in January. The MLS season starts in February, so the Spaniard would join a new team right away in preseason. The management of the Catalan club would reportedly not mind such an option, unlike Xavi.
The fact is that the departure of the captain would definitely reduce the club’s wage bill. After all, Barça saved five million euros on the early retirement of Gerard Piqué alone. Their spending on wages is now over the limit by 26 million euros.
There is also a third option, namely to finish the season at Barcelona and extend his contract for another six months with a significant salary reduction so that Busquets can leave for MLS before the start of the 2024 season. This would give the club even more time to find a replacement for their defensive midfielder.
