Fans of the queen of motorsport have had the opportunity to vote for the most successful race of the season so far on the official F1 website over the last few days. The British Grand Prix was the overwhelming winner, unsurprisingly, offering spectators plenty of fierce battles between top drivers. The British round at Silverstone received 50% of the votes!
Honestly, what other race could it have been? July’s British Grand Prix proved definitively that the new technical regulations introduced from this season onwards have indeed helped the cars follow the drivers more closely behind.
Silverstone hosted the 57th Grand Prix in Formula One World Championship history. And it was undoubtedly one of the most spectacular. Not just in the history of racing at the former military airfield, not just in the history of the British Grand Prix. What 140,000 fans saw on the track and millions of viewers watched on their screens was one of the greatest grand prix in the history of grand prix racing.
The race started with a mass casualty. After contact from George Russell’s Mercedes, Kuan-yu Zhou’s Alfa Romeo took to the air, subsequently landing upside down in the protective mesh above the tyre barrier after screeching for several seconds. Immediately afterwards, red flags flew over the track, suspending all on-track action for a full one hour.
On the restart, championship leader Max Verstappen overtook debutant pole position holder Carlos Sainz after the Spaniard made a mistake at Chapel corner. However, the Dutchman ran into debris moments later, affecting his pace for the rest of the race.
The highlight of the entire grand prix came in the last ten laps. The safety car exit brought the vast majority into the pits. However, Ferrari decided to call in only Sainz to the mechanics, while Leclerc remained on track with worn hard compound.
Once racing resumed, Leclerc was overtaken by his teammate Sainz. The Monegasque then had to fight off pressure from Pérez and Hamilton. Sainz kept his cool and dominated his first career grand prix.
There was a lot more going on in the race. Incidentally, a more detailed look at this grand prix is offered in this article. Here, you can make up your mind if you think this year’s British Grand Prix really deserves the moniker of the best grand prix of the first part of the season.
It’s worth adding that the Hungarian Grand Prix came in second place behind the British Grand Prix. A race marked by Ferrari’s sheer strategic explosion received a total of 18% of the vote. The Bahrain and Austrian Grand Prix finished third together, both scoring 6% of the vote.
