Tennis coach and expert Patrick Mouratoglou reveals the reasons why Spain’s Alcaraz is struggling with his results. He is indeed going through a period of poor results, but on the other hand he finally enjoyed his first win at the ATP Finals. What are the reasons why Alcaraz doesn’t like this part of the season so much and does he even have a chance to advance out of the regular group in Turin?
Ever since the tennis tour moved back to China, things haven’t been as good as they used to be for the two-time Grand Slam winner. Carlos Alcaraz surprisingly crashed out in the first round of the Masters in Paris and also started with a defeat at the ATP Finals in Turin.
Both these events are held indoors and this is the main reason for Alcaraz’s loss of lustre. At least according to tennis coach and expert Patrick Mouratoglou.
Causes of the decline of Carlos Alcaraz
Although the hall brings fair conditions without the effects of the weather, this is what reduces the value of the Spanish tennis player’s shares. The world number two is better able to adapt to the sometimes tricky circumstances of outdoor matches.
Most other tennis players have more trouble adapting to outdoor matches, according to Mouratoglou. “This makes it more difficult for Alcaraz to be a dominant player on a hard indoor surface,” the tennis expert concludes.
Players like Denmark’s Rune grew up playing tennis mostly indoors, the Spaniard understandably has much less experience with indoor matches, and that will improve with time. And the worst case scenario: the indoor part of the season is relatively short.
ATP Finals 2023
In the final event of this year’s ATP season, the Wimbledon winner shook off his opening defeat by Germany’s Zverev to take on Russia’s Rublyov in two sets. The latter kept pace with the world number two only until the end of the first set.
Alcaraz kept his hopes of success in Turin alive with a 7:5, 6:2 victory. Everything will be decided by his last match against Daniil Medvedev. And it is the one that ended the 20-year-old Spaniard’s chances of defending his triumph at the US Open last year.
Finally,
Rubljov certainly did not play most of the match with Carlito at the upper limit of his capabilities. The duel against Medvedev will be the match of truth. At least in terms of this year’s ATP Finals.
