The Abu Dhabi Grand Prix was one of the most watched sporting events not only of the last few days, but probably of the whole year. However, apart from the joy or sadness of the final results, it also brought a massive wave of criticism to which the FIA is trying to respond. What does their statement say?

The events of the last laps of the race have provoked a huge backlash from fans, some teams, drivers and not least the media. While the commissioners have dismissed Mercedes’ protests, as they say no rules were broken, the FIA has issued a statement in the last few hours to respond to the truly massive criticism.

Following Wednesday’s meeting of the World Motor Sport Council in Paris, it was announced that a detailed analysis will now be carried out to determine what happened and how to adapt the rules for the following season accordingly.

The FIA said in a statement that they were far from indifferent to this “misunderstanding” and said it was damaging to the reputation of Formula 1. The FIA also said it was the most exciting and intense season in recent years.

The circumstances surrounding the use of the safety car following the incident involving driver Nicholas Latifi and the related communications between the race directorate and the Formula 1 teams in particular have caused considerable misunderstanding and reaction from the Formula 1 teams, drivers and fans, a controversy that is currently damaging the image of the championship,” the FIA said in a statement.

“This matter will be discussed and resolved with all teams and drivers to draw any lessons from this situation and to clarify to participants, media and fans the current regulations, which are designed to preserve the competitive nature of our sport while ensuring the safety of drivers and officials,” the FIA said in response to the chaos and massive criticism.

The FIA, led by its President, will reportedly set things in motion and propose to the F1 Commission to give a clear mandate for a study and proposal to the Sports Advisory Committee, with the support of F1 drivers, so that subsequent feedback will ensure that any changes to the regulations are secured before the 2022 season.

In any case, this is not a good look for the International Automobile Federation and the Sports Commissioners. Indeed, the penultimate Saudi Arabian Grand Prix has already caused huge controversy. The events of the last race of the season were just the icing on the cake, albeit a very big one.

In order to maintain respect, some of the rules must now be investigated and modified before the start of the 2022 edition, as the FIA statement also says.

We can’t even imagine the confusion that would otherwise result. Given these facts, we can assume that the winter break will be very busy in its own way. And not only because of some analyses or controversies that have arisen.

Formula 1 is facing a new era and expectations ahead of the new season will be high.
