The Slovaks failed to win their second match of the group stage of the European Championship, losing 0:1 to the Swedes in St.Petersburg. Emil Forsberg scored the only goal from a penalty kick. The Slovaks will need at least a draw with the Spaniards in their last match.
Sebastian Larsson had the first chance of the match in the third minute, but Martin Dúbravka made the save. Juraj Kucka had a header on the other end, but missed the target. Then the game calmed down and chances were minimal.
It can be said that our neighbours were more active, but in the final phase it was creaking. Marek Hamšík tried to make things right, but his attempt in the 43rd minute missed the target. That was the last chance of the first half, so we went into the booths goalless.
Alexander Isak opened the second half with a shot, but it was blocked by Milan Škriniar. In the 58th minute, Kucka had a chance, but Robin Olsen saved it. A minute later, the second goalkeeper shone. Ludwig Augustinson’s header was parried by Dúbravka.
The Swedes went for the opening goal, but Isak’s attempt ended up just over the bar. Sociedad’s youngster continued his rampage. In the 71st minute, he toyed with four opponents and was stopped by Dúbravka.
In the 76th minute, the Newcastle goalkeeper had a bad moment. He fouled Robin Quaison in the box and a penalty was whistled. Emil Forsberg took the ball and converted with ease. The Swedes held off the final pressure to take all three points.
