The end of the iconic Camp Nou name? Barcelona stadium to be named after music streaming company
Throughout the 21st century, we are used to the idea that when people talk about Barcelona’s stadium, they mean the Nou Camp. But that will now cease to be the case, at least officially. In fact, the new sponsor of the Catalan club will apparently be the music streaming company Spotify, which will also get the rights to the stadium’s name.
With a capacity of 99,500 spectators, Camp Nou is the largest stadium in Europe and the fifth largest in the world. For Barcelona fans, it is a temple where many memorable nights have taken place.
Until 2000, the stadium was called “Estadi del FC Barcelona,” but thanks to a vote of the members of the official supporters’ club, the stadium was renamed Camp Nou, which translates as “the new pitch”.
Now, however, it may be changing again. The club is in a huge financial crisis and president Joan Laporta is looking for a sponsor to help the Catalan club with its huge debts. As reported by Spanish newspaper RAC1, the Blaugranas management has reached an agreement with Spotify, the music streaming company.
The deal would be valid for the next three years, with Spotify subsidising the club with 280 million euros. Spotify’s green branding should be seen on both the men’s and women’s team jerseys, while also on training gear.
But that’s not all, the Swedish company will also get the rights to the stadium’s name. If the deal is confirmed, Camp Nou should also be renamed Spotify. Whether it will be called “Estadio de Spotify” or the more fan-friendly “Spotify Camp Nou” is not yet certain.
