The end of Jordi Alba at Barcelona? The Catalans have reached an agreement with the Italian club, the back refuses to leave
Jordi Alba has had 10 seasons at Barcelona. He has done a lot for the club, for a decade he has let practically no one go to his left-back position. Yet the club currently wants to get rid of him and send him to Italy, which the 33-year-old defender refuses.
Jordi Alba has had 10 seasons at Barcelona. He has done a lot for the club, for a decade he has let virtually no one in at left-back. Yet the club currently wants to get rid of him and send him to Italy, which the 33-year-old defender refuses.
Barcelona is looking for ways to make the best of the financial crisis it is in and at the same time to comply with the wishes of coach Xavi. And with the Catalans wanting to bring in left-back Marcos Alonso from Chelsea at the last minute, someone has to leave or the club will not fit under the salary cap.
The management has been urging Alba to take a pay cut all summer, but one of the three captains has not agreed to it, as he had already taken a pay cut before last season. Alba, meanwhile, is under contract at Camp Nou until 2024 and is already 33 years old.
And because of that, the Culés decided to find another solution, so they started looking for a new contract for Alba. According to Jijantes, Barcelona have agreed with Inter to host the left-back, with the Catalans continuing to pay 60% of Alba’s salary.
However, the Spanish international doesn’t want to leave Barcelona and so he rejected the management’s offer. At the moment, the Blaugranas management is in a tight spot, without Alba’s permission they will not move anywhere.
His situation is complicated. While last season he was the undisputed player of the starting lineup, he had practically no competition and played almost all the games, this season he would spend a lot of games on the bench.
In fact, Barcelona have already started trying to get rid of him, so Xavi fielded youngster Balde against Real Sociedad and Real Valladolid. Alba only played the first bad match (0: 0) against Rayo Vallecano, after that he didn’t make the starting lineup.
Moreover, the management wants to bring Marcos Alonso from Chelsea. According to MARCA newspaper, it would take a miracle for the Spaniard not to become a Barcelona player on Thursday. Alba would suddenly have a lot of competition, but he still wants to stay in the east of Spain.
