Busquets’ contract expires in June 2023 and according to Spanish daily Sport, he will not extend it. Barcelona have offered their legend to work with them for another two years, however, the tall midfielder has only asked for a one-year contract extension.
This is also why Sergio Busquets is expected to move at the end of this season. The American club Inter Miami, which is partly owned by English legend David Beckham, has come forward with an offer.
Forbes reports that contract negotiations with Miami should be at an advanced stage. In addition, Busquets could meet other former teammates there. The names of Lionel Messi, Luis Suarez and Jordi Alba have also been linked to the American team.
The thirty-four-year-old midfielder is still one of the pillars of the midfield and although his minutes on the pitch are decreasing over time, he still wears the captain’s armband.
During his fifteen years at Barcelona, he has become a club legend. He won the Spanish top flight eight times with the Catalan side and also lifted the Champions League trophy three times. He has played an incredible 685 games for Barcelona since 2008.
The end of his time at Barcelona also marks the end of his national team career. It is very likely that the 2022 World Cup will be Busquets’ last.
The Barcelona management has been preparing for the departure of Sergio Busquets. His direct replacement should be the young Dutchman Frenkie de Jong, who started his fourth season in the Spanish team.
