Sebastian Vettel will undoubtedly join the ranks of other legends not only of Formula 1, but of motorsport as a whole. In fact, the German driver has announced the end of his career, with one big story coming to a close at the end of this year’s edition. The champion is saying goodbye.
It’s something everyone might have expected given the circumstances. Unfortunately. The four-time world champion has announced that he will finally call it a day at the end of this season.
Meanwhile, until recently, there was speculation about his contract extension with Aston Martin, who were very interested in Vettel staying. The departure of the 2010, 2011, 2012 and 2013 champion will thus trigger a carousel of potential F1 transfers.
So the big question at the moment is who will take the position of Lance Stroll’s teammate. ” The decision to retire was very difficult for me and I spent a lot of time thinking about it,” Vettel said in an official statement from Aston Martin.
“At the end of the year I want to give myself more time to think about what I will do in the future. But it is very clear to me that as a father I want to spend more time with my family. But today is not about saying goodbye, it’s more about saying thank you – to everyone – not least the fans, without whose passionate support F1 could not exist, ” the 35-year-old said.
“I have had the privilege of working with many fantastic people over the last 15 years – there are too many to mention and thank,” he added.
Vettel’s career at a glance
Vettel made his Formula One debut in the 2007 US Grand Prix when he was given a chance by BMW Sauber. He settled permanently in the queen of motorsport in the 2008 season when he joined sister team Red Bull, then called Torro Rosso.
With this team, he became the youngest ever F1 race winner in 2008, before moving up to Red Bull the following season, with whom he won four world championship titles between 2010 and 2013. This was a period of great dominance for the Austrian team.
In 2015, he switched to Ferrari, in whose colours he even fought for the title in 2017 and 2018, albeit unsuccessfully each time. On both occasions, he lost to his then main rival Lewis Hamilton.
At the end of 2020, he then announced a switch to Aston Martin, with which he did not achieve any significant success. His best finish since then is second place in the 2021 Hungarian Grand Prix.
