Djokovic close to triumph
Things are looking up in Melbourne. Only the top four tennis players remain at the season’s opening Grand Slam. Of the four biggest favourites, only Alcaraz is missing. He was unexpectedly beaten by Alexander Zverev in the quarterfinals .
The biggest favourite, on the other hand, is not missing. Novak Djokovic will play in Australia until the last days of the major. He will face the much-anticipated duel with Italy’s Sinner in the final.
He is certainly not an unknown opponent for him. But he is a challenge for him because two of the last three duels were won by Djokovic’s generation younger opponent.
Calendar Grand Slam
Djokovic is known for wanting to break all the records he can break. Winning the calendar grand slam is a huge challenge for him. For that, he would have to conquer all four majors in one calendar year.
The last person to do it was Rod Laver among men more than 50 years ago. And who should follow him but a Serbian tennis player. He is basically getting better all the time and at thirty-six seems to be at the peak of his career.
Djokovic has twice come very close to the calendar grand slam. The last time was last year, when he was one match short of capturing it. But he fell short to Alcaraz in the Wimbledon final.
The world number one can take the first step towards this legendary success in Melbourne, where he has been doing well for a long time. The native of Belgrade has triumphed here ten times and in the last four years he has always won here.
So Djokovic will attempt to win all four majors in a year again this year. The question is how many more attempts he has left. Time will not stop even a player like him at the moment.
Djokovic’s retirement
Expert Mats Wilander revealed his view on the question of Djokovic’s career ending. He openly admits that Djokovic’s age is just a number. At forty he is able to be as fit as the formerly great players at thirty.
Moreover, it is evident that the Serbian enjoys his condition. So there can be no question of an early end to his career. The estimate of the former Swedish professional tennis player is that Djokovic will be on the circuit for another four or five years.
And we can be sure that we will see something more in those years. The first act will be Friday’s duel against Sinner. So, cheers to the semifinals of the Australian Open.
