On Wednesday, the fans of Italian football will have another key match that may give a hint about who has a better chance to win Serie A. Inter Milan will have a tough match on Bologna’s soil.
Bologna are only 13th, but in the last five rounds they have managed to lose points to Juventus (1-1) and AC Milan (0-0). Both games were played away. It has made a significant statement in the title fight and can certainly do so again.
AC currently have the upper hand in the title fight with 74 points. Inter is two points behind, but has the aforementioned match with Bologna to spare. However, the situation could have been very different.
The Rossoneri played on Sunday at the ground of Lazio in Rome and did not enter the match in the best way. After just four minutes, Ciro Immobile sent the home side into the lead with his 26th league goal of the season.
As expected, the second half of the match was overwhelming for AC. However, it dominated the whole game. Olivier Giroud equalised in the 50th minute and the talented Sandro Tonali scored the winning goal in the 92nd minute after a pass from Zlatan Ibrahimovic.
Not long ago, Napoli were also in the game, but the weekend’s result definitely eliminated them from the title fight. In the last three rounds it has lost twice and drawn once, on Sunday it lost to Empoli, before that it was robbed of points by AS Roma and Fiorentina.
All the positions for the Champions League are already filled. Neither Napoli nor Juventus should lose their place in the top four, at most they can swap positions.
However, the fight for the Europa League and Conference places will still be interesting. There is only a four-point gap between fifth-placed AS Roma and eighth-placed Atalanta. Lazio are sixth and Fiorentina, who are having a good season, are seventh.
There is also drama at the bottom of the table. Venice can’t seem to save themselves anymore, but Genoa and Salernitana still have a chance. Moreover, Salernitana have won their last three games, so they are in good form and have a game in hand compared to Cagliari, who are three points ahead.
Sampdoria, who have only five points more than Genoa and Salernitana, will also have to fight for top-flight status.
