An absolutely magnificent performance by Lewis Hamilton in Saturday’s sprint qualifying! Theseven-time world champion was disqualified from yesterday’s qualifying on Friday afternoon.

The reason for this was the illegal use of DRS, as the rear wing of his Mercedes was more than the permitted 85 millimetres.

However, Max Verstappen was also on the carpet, as he touched Hamilton’s Mercedes and measured the rear wings of both cars after qualifying, when all the cars are in a state of parc fermé. For this, the sports commissioners fined him fifty thousand euros!

Hamilton started the sprint from the very back of the grid. However, it didn’t seem to mean anything to him, as he easily moved up the order during the following laps.

Carlos Sainz also made a great start on the soft tyres, managing to keep Sergio Pérez in the Red Bull behind him throughout the race. With the end of the season approaching, not only Sainz, but also the entire Ferrari team needs every point to be successful in their battle for third place with McLaren.

Lando Norris was at least sixth in the sprint, while Daniel Ricciardo was stuck in tenth position, overtaken by Hamilton with a few laps to go and finished as high as eleventh.

The Mercedes driver put in a truly impressive performance, moving up from last place to number five. However, he still has to take the penalty of dropping five places on the grid for fitting a new combustion engine, his fifth of the season.

So this is the final standings for Saturday’s sprint. However, taking into account Hamilton’s penalty, this is also the line-up for the start of the Brazilian Grand Prix – Bottas, Verstappen, Sainz, Pérez, Norris, Leclerc, Gasly, Ocon, Vettel and Hamilton.

It should be noted, however, that conditions are set to be very different for Sunday’s Brazilian Grand Prix.

The red-marked softest compound may have lasted longer than expected, but if there is indeed a lot more heat, and thus higher track temperatures, these tyres may experience more degradation.

If these predictions come true, pit-stop strategy will be all the more important. And as we all know, thanks to sprint qualifying, drivers and teams have a free choice of tyres. The Brazilian Grand Prix starts at 6pm, so don’t miss it!
