Ferland Mendy immediately pushed legendary defender Marcelo out of the lineup upon his arrival at Real Madrid. However, it didn’t take much and everything could have been completely different.

The French footballer did not have an easy childhood. At the age of 11, he lost his father. It was then that he first developed hip problems.

The problems persisted over the years and at the age of 16 he was taken to hospital. Mendy couldn’t even walk. Doctors diagnosed him with arthritis.

This is a disease caused by bacteria, fungi or viruses that enter the bloodstream. If Mendy didn’t get the treatment he needed, he risked lifelong consequences.

He would never be able to play football, but worse, he couldn’t even walk. Mendy was then treated very badly by PSG, whose youth team he played for. The club management refused to help him and simply sacked him.

After a long, tiring and difficult treatment, he managed to return to football. He started again from scratch in the fourth highest French league.

The left-back could be said to have never stood out for his talent and was an average player. But he never gave up and never let up. He pushed himself hard.

From the fourth division, he got his chance at Le Havre. Initially, he was in the reserve team and the biggest breakthrough in his career came in the 2016/2017 season when he became a stable member of the starting lineup. His performances earned him a transfer to top-flight side Lyon.

After two years came a move to the most successful club on the planet, Real Madrid, when his transfer was requested by Zinedine Zidane himself. During his four years in Spain, he enjoyed six trophies, including winning the Champions League.
