Real Madrid won the Champions League again after four years. Just like last time, they beat Liverpool in the final. Karim Benzema, who some say clearly deserves the Ballon d’Or, contributed to the victory.

46 competitive matches, 44 goals and 15 assists. These are not the stats of Lionel Messi or Cristiano Ronaldo. These are the numbers achieved last season by Karim Benzema, the driving force behind Real Madrid.

The French striker had the best season of his career at the age of 34 and is one of the most talked-about contenders for the Ballon d’Or, the award for the best footballer on the planet.

This season, Benzema helped Real Madrid win not only the league title but also the Champions League winners’ trophy. Moreover, he scored 15 goals and added 2 assists in 12 games in the millionaire competition. Especially in the knockout phase, he destroyed his team’s opponents as if on a treadmill.

According to some, the voting should stop immediately and the Ballon d’Or should be handed over to Benzema. At least that’s how Thierry Henry, the legend of French football, sees it.

“I just want to say something about France Football or whoever is voting. End the vote, Karim has won, goodbye,” Henry expressed to CBC Sports.

French national team coach Didier Deschamps has a similar opinion. Benzema’s former club, Olympique Lyon, also made their opinion clear, posting a post on social media congratulating him not only on another Champions League win, but also on his first Ballon d’Or win.

And what did Benzema have to say? “I don’t think I could have achieved more at club level. We’ll see what happens. In any case, I am proud of what I have achieved,” he told Canal Plus.
