The saga of Kylian Mbappé continues. July 31 was the last day the Frenchman could exercise his contract clause and extend his contract at PSG. That didn’t happen, so Mbappé is up for sale.

When PSG triumphantly unveiled Kylian Mbappé last year, signing a contract until 2025, it had a small catch. The contract was effectively only until 2024 with an option for another year. However, this could only be activated by the player himself.

Mbappé sent a letter to the management in June saying that he would not renew his contract and would like to leave for free next year. But logically the management doesn’t like that, because losing the most expensive player (180m euros) without any compensation would be tantamount to madness.

For this reason, the management of the Parisian club should have given Mbappe an ultimatum. Either extend his contract or leave by July 31. Indeed, it was on the last day of July that the clause in his contract for another year could be activated.

At the stroke of midnight tonight, Mbappé has not done that, making it clear at this point that PSG will try to sell him at any cost. Losing one of football’s biggest stars for free is not an option.

If Mbappé is to leave already, PSG need a fat sum to acquire a replacement. It also needs the money because of financial fair-play; Qatari funds are almost inexhaustible, but UEFA has strict rules, although punishing breaches of these rules is frowned upon.

So, at the moment, Mbappé’s contract expires in June 2024. PSG management think the 24-year-old striker has already struck a deal with Real Madrid for a contract from next June, when he would come for free. PSG wants to avoid that and will have to contact Real on its own.

The problem, however, will be the amount. The Parisian outfit would reportedly like a sum of around €200 million, Madrid certainly don’t want to pay that much for a player a year before the end of his contract.
