The days of Mourinho throwing Abramovich’s money around are over. Which coach has spent the most money since 2000?

Of course, José Mourinho, who often came to a big club with high expectations, spent the most money from his employer’s pocket, but after leaving Inter he never achieved the expected success. Right behind, however, is Pep Guardiola.

Of course, José Mourinho, who often came to a big club with high expectations, spent the most money out of his employer’s pocket, but never achieved the expected success after leaving Inter. Pep Guardiola is right behind him, however, and can be counted on to surpass the Portuguese soon.

Mourinho has brought in a total of 104 players since 2000, who have collectively cost club owners €1.76 billion. Guardiola has been a little more modest at least in terms of numbers, having brought in only 67 players. On the other hand, they cost the club’s coffers 1.59 billion euros.

Since the same year, Carlo Ancelotti and Manuel Pellegrini have not kept a low profile either, both bringing in 88 players at the same time. The only difference is that the Italian coach’s reinforcements cost €1.37 billion, while the Chilean’s cost €1.16 billion.

Fifth place is then closed by Massimiliano Allegri, who reached the amount of 1.06 billion mainly during his time at AC Milan and Juventus, where he is returning after two years.

And that Atlético Madrid has a moderate transfer policy? That may be so, but €985 million for 68 reinforcements of Diego Simeone is not exactly small! Even more so when he has only been in Madrid since 2011.

The much-criticised Arsenal also spent considerable money on transfer policy during Arsene Wenger’s tenure. The Gunners owners had to come up with 891 million euros for the French coach, that’s how much 84 reinforcements cost them.

Top 10 highest spending coaches since 2000:

  1. José Mourinho – 104 players – €1.76 billion
  2. Pep Guardiola – 67 players – €1.59 billion
  3. Carlo Ancelotti – 88 players – €1.37 billion
  4. Manuel Pellegrini – 88 players – 1.16 billion euros
  5. Massimiliano Allegri – 96 players – 1.06 billion euros
  6. Diego Simeone – 68 players – 985 million euros
  7. Antonio Conte – 84 players – 944 million euros
  8. Arsene Wenger – 84 players – 891 million euros
  9. Ernesto Valverde – 53 players – 864 million euros
  10. Unai Emery – 73 players – 846 million euros

However, given the current trend, these names of coaching icons can be expected to disappear from the top 10 over time.

Change will surely come soon even at the top rung, as Mourinho is probably no longer engaged by a top club, given the poor results of recent years, and they certainly don’t have the same budget at AS Roma as, for example, Guardiola at Manchester City.
