The famous Davis Cup enters its final phase this week. Spain, Great Britain and Serbia are among the teams that have qualified among the top 16 teams. Which world-class players will take part?
One of the four teams that will be playing on home soil will be Team Spain. However, the best Spanish tennis player of the moment will be missing among the participants. The highest seeded Spaniard will be Davidovich Fokina (25th in the ATP rankings).
Apart from the Czech tennis players, the opponents of the Spaniards will also be Serbs. On the other hand, their line-up does not lack the old world number one Novak Djokovic. The last team in the group is South Korea.
The Italians will host Group A. Jannik Sinner is missing among the nominated players, but world No. 18 Lorenzo Musetti is ready. This season so far has been rather stagnant for the twenty-one-year-old, with his elimination in the first round of the US Open being a big disappointment. Now he has a chance to prove himself in front of his home fans.
The Italians will also face Team Canada, who are defending last year’s triumph, and the Chileans. The South American line-up includes Nicolas Jarry, who has already won two ATP events this year and is ranked 22nd in the rankings.
One of the highest ranked players taking part in the Davis Cup finals will be Australian De Minaur. The 24-year-old is currently ranked 12th in the rankings, his highest ranking to date. Still, the Australians will not be the main favourites in Group B.
Loaded line-ups for the British and Americans
Group B is hosted by Manchester and the Brits have put together a very strong team. Cameron Norrie (17th on the ATP) should be their biggest paper mainstay. Daniel Evans had a great start to the American concrete season. He triumphed at the tournament in Washington. The home team’s joker could be playing legend Andy Murray.
Alongside the British and Australians, the Swiss and French will also be in Manchester. The former team will feature, among others, veteran Stan Wawrinka.
The Americans boast a very strong line-up. They will face the Croatians, the Dutch and the Finns with the star pair Frances Tiafoe – Tommy Paul. The former recently reached the quarter-finals of the US Open, the latter the final of the Masters in Toronto a month ago. Both players are just below the ATP top ten.
Finally…
The Davis Cup is one of the most prestigious sporting events in the world of sport. This team event is a welcome treat for many tennis fans. We certainly have something to look forward to.
