The clash between the two favourites in Group C was to the satisfaction of Denmark, who drew with England. The Vikings thus won an acceptable result against the Islanders. Hjulmand and Harry Kane, one of the biggest candidates for the goal scoring crown, scored for England.

There was a time when Danish Vikings sailed to England to plunder. The Northmen were going to annoy the English on Thursday afternoon. The clash between the two main contenders for promotion from Group C offered an interesting spectacle.

Gareth Southgate had no reason to change the starting line-up after the win over Serbia (1:0) and so Crystal Palace’s Guehi came on again at stopper, Liverpool’s Alexander-Arnold in the centre of midfield and Bayern’s Kane at the top.

But the Danes started better, it was when Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg had a great touch on the ball. On the other side, Phil Foden countered with a fine save. But Kasper Schmeichel was only beaten by Harry Kane’s 18th minute finish. The favourite led 1: 0.

England could have been frozen out by Hojbjerg

After half an hour of play, the game could have been level. Jonas Wind had a chance, but his joy was spoiled by Stones with a timely slip. Two minutes later, the score was 1-1. Morten Hjulmand had a great shot from distance, which was deflected against the left post.

Foden could have given Albion the lead before half-time, but he got his teeth into Schmeichel. Sako didn’t fare any better at the start of the second act and the packed Frankfurt stadium was still watching a scoreless duel.

The 37-year-old Anderlecht goalkeeper continued to torment the English shooters. Neither Foden nor Aston Villa’s substitute Olie Watkins could beat him again. Hojbjerg could have frozen England again, but his shot went wide of the bar.

So the Danish Vikings eventually came away from their clash with England with an acceptable draw. One of the biggest favourites of the championship will have no problem with advancing to the next part despite the loss. In the last match, the Islanders will face Slovenia. The Danes will play Serbia.
