The Czech Republic defeated the unpleasant Norway 6:3 in the second game of the World Championship at home. The Nordic opponent led 3:1, but Radim Rulík’s team did not give up and won thanks to a great second and third period. The three points remain with the host of the championship.
The Czech team entered the game better than the weaker opponent and had a bit more of the game from the opening goal. It was not surprising that it was the home team that took the lead.
Roman Červenka opened the score after a very nice action. He kept the defenders on his back and followed up his raid against Finland with a shot under the top bar. But the lead did not last long for Radim Rulík’s charges.
After 30 seconds from the Czech captain’s goal, Stian Solberg made space on the edge of the circles and beat Petr Mrazek. The Czech goalie’s shot flew between his legs.
In the 13th minute, Noah Steen poked the puck to David Špáček during a Czech power play and, in a face-off with Mrazek, slid the puck into the net. The puck barely made it over the goal line, but even goals like that count.
In the 18th minute, Eirik Salsten received a fantastic pass from Solberg and shot into the open net, giving Mrazek no chance. The Czech team gave the Norwegians too much room to combine.
A few seconds later, however, Červenka scored a second time and reduced the difference to one goal. The Czech captain got a great pass from behind the net from Lukas Sedlak and with a precise shot to the bar he gave Henrik Haukeland no chance.
Second period
The Czech team created overwhelming pressure for a large part of the middle part of the game, but lacked a shot on goal. Whether it was Tomas Kundrátek’s shot attempts from the blue line or a few Czech forwards, none of them ended up in the net.
Ondřej Beránek solved the situation with four minutes to go, shooting from the right circle over the Norwegian goalie’s pads to tie the game at 3:3.
Third period
Five minutes into the third period, a shot by Jakub Krejcik skated down Heukeland’s back and into the net. The puck was crossed in front of the Norwegian goalie by Matěj Stránský, who was credited with the goal. The Czech team took the lead for the first time since the first period.
With about three minutes to go, Libor Hajek fired a shot from the blue line, which was perfectly tipped in by Ondřej Palát. The shot hit the back post and the Pardubice defender increased the score to 5:3. Ondřej Palát closed the scoring with a shot into the empty net.
