The curse of the right winger or Manchester United should look more at character than football talent

Mason Greenwood, Antony and now Jadon Sancho. Manchester United could have had three top players at right wing, but instead they have no one and we’re not talking about injuries here, we’re talking about morale.

Since the departure of Sir Alex Ferguson, this problem is more than evident. Players are going to Manchester United for higher amounts than they would go to other big clubs as the quality of play has faded tremendously. So the club has to overpay incoming footballers incredibly, often it doesn’t even last one season and it comes back to haunt the Red Devils like a boomerang.

Most often this manifests itself in poor performances when players like Memphis Depay or Harry Maguire fail to live up to their potential. But it’s even more evident in the morale of the team, specifically in the lives of the players themselves.

Whether we’re talking about the issues being addressed by Greenwood or Antony, or the situation surrounding Sancho, the result is always the same. There is a league game this weekend and the right wing spot is missing players who were bought for that position.

Previously we have seen players drop out of one or other of the various positions. This time, however, it has come together. Antony is trying to rectify the whole Brazil thing and Sancho was also not included in the lineup by coach Erik ten Hag.

The Dutch coach eventually resorted to a number of changes and the result was not good at all as he got three goals at Old Trafford from Brighton, once even Danny Welbeck, who left Manchester United back in 2014, got through.

Before the season, Manchester United were expected to be at the top, however, they are currently only in 13th place with 6 points. Moreover, they are already 7 points behind the top 4, which is a big gap after 5 rounds.

In addition, apart from goalkeeper André Onana, the new signings have not yet presented themselves in a good light at all. Danish striker Rasmus Hojlund came on against Brighton in the 64th minute and Sergio Reguilón came on in the 85th minute. But time will test both of them.

However, Red Devils fans can only hope that ten Hague will be able to keep his charges at bay better than he has done so far. It was already a flop last year with Cristiano Ronaldo, and the situation with the aforementioned names suggests a lot.
