Already the beginning of the match seemed to foreshadow its further course. The home team’s players were much more active on the ball, Leverkusen’s defence had a big problem with Leipzig’s offensive activity from the start.
Already in the 4th minute, Christopher Nkunku got into the big white space and fell to the ground after a fight with an opponent, but the referee did not whistle him for the foul. However, the rest of the first half was clearly in the home team’s favour.
Leipzig’s offensive efforts culminated in the first goal of the game in the 32nd minute. It was the dreaded striker Nkunku who opened the scoring by jumping perfectly on Dominik Szoboszlai’s centre and heading the ball into the net! A perfectly played standard situation – 1::0.
The score was 1:0, and the game didn’t change much in the second act. Bayer Leverkusen were getting into the opponent’s attacking half and were on the ball more often, but the home team had solid opportunities.
Timo Werner scored the game’s securing goal in the 83rd minute when he worked a long pass from Amadou Haïdara and headed just wide of the right post.
Leverkusen lost 0:2 to Leipzig and thus failed to win a very important match. Even the five substitutions made by coach Alonso during the second half did not change this defeat.
In the 65th minute, for example, Schick replaced Hložek in the attack, but even this change did not lead to a goal. RB Leipzig moved up to fifth in the league table with this win.
Leverkusen continue their results crisis, having won only twice and lost five times in their last 10 matches. Currently, the Czech team is in the 15th place in the barrage.
