The combative Hungarians are having fun and could send one of the giants to Nations League Group B
After three rounds of the Nations League, Hungary is in second place in its group, with Germany and England breathing down its neck and only Italy better. The chances of staying in the elite league are alive, and what’s more, the Hungarians can send one of the giants to Group B.
After three rounds of the Nations League, Hungary is in second place in its group, with Germany and England breathing down its neck and only Italy better. The chances of staying in the elite league are alive, and what’s more, the Hungarians can send one of the giants to Group B.
The Hungarians have had no luck with the lottery ticket in recent years. At last year’s Euro they were assigned Germany, Portugal and France to their group, but the football midgets didn’t get discouraged and were in the relegation game until the last round.
First the Hungarians lost to Portugal with an 84th minute goal, then in the second game they deservedly drew with France and held a 2-1 qualification lead against the Germans until the 84th minute. It was Leon Goretzka’s goal that took their hopes away.
To make matters worse, a group of death awaited the Hungarians in the Nations League as well. Attractive duels with the Italians, Germans and English seemed to be very difficult, the chances of staying in the elite league were very slim.
However, Marco Rossi’s charges entered the third edition of the Nations League with a surprise 1-0 win over the English in front of the home fans, which was secured by Dominik Szoboszlai’s 66th minute penalty.
In Italy, the Hungarians fell 1:2, but on Saturday they drew with the Germans 1:1 and once again confirmed their strength at home. The point moved them into second place, two points clear of last-placed England and just a point off leaders Italy.
The chances of one of the favourites being relegated after half the matches played are quite high. The English and Germans have not won so far, the Italians are in crisis after a successful Euro, while the Hungarians have the appetite and logically the greatest motivation.
