Xabi Alonso has been linked with Real Madrid, where legendary Italian Carlo Ancelotti will retire as head coach after the season. His employer doesn’t see his departure to the White Ballet as realistic.

Xabi Alonso is reportedly the main candidate to become the new coach of Real Madrid, after Carlo Ancelotti leaves after the season to coach the Brazilian Canaries.

The Spanish coach has played for the White Ballet during his career and has a warm relationship with the club. He is having a great time at Leverkusen, having lifted the German side significantly last year and leading the league with them so far this season.

A few weeks ago, Xabi made a commitment to us when he extended his contract with the club until 2026. He doesn’t have to comment on anything now, he remains fully focused on Leverkusen,” Bayer sporting director Simon Rolfes was quoted in the media.

He is certainly not fazed by the speculation about Xabi’s departure to Real. “We are very calm in this respect, even if these speculations are very true,” Rolfes added confidently.

Apart from Xabi, there are other former Real stars in the game

Xabi Alonso arrived at Leverkusen last October, when it seemed the club would struggle to survive in the top flight despite its high ambitions. The Spanish strategist has brought a fresh wind to the sails.

Bayer have picked up a lot under his leadership and were already considered one of the league favourites this season. So far he has more than confirmed this and it seems that he can fight for the title with Bayern Munich.

Of course, Real are watching their former player’s success with fondness, as Leverkusen are presenting themselves with handsome football and Xabi Alonso is confirming that he has become an excellent coach.

Other possible candidates to take over from Ancelotti next summer are Brighton’s English manager Roberto de Zerbi or other former White Ballet standouts Raúl González and Álvaro Arbeloa.
