The Citizens must salvage Premier League honour in the Champions League. All English sides have lost so far
The Premier League is regarded by many as the best league in the world. However, its ambassadors in Europe are not showing much quality at the moment. The first three teams have been defeated, and England’s honour has to be saved by Manchester City.
The Premier League is regarded by many as the best league in the world. However, its ambassadors in Europe are not showing much quality at the moment. The first three teams have been defeated, and England’s honour has to be saved by Manchester City.
While last season two English teams reached the semi-finals and one the final, the current Champions League is not looking so good for the island teams.
Tottenham were the first to do so, losing 0:1 to AC in Milan. Chelsea also came back from away empty-handed, losing 0:1 to Borussia Dortmund.
And Liverpool added the finishing touch to England’s misery by beating Real Madrid at home. They failed to hold a 2:0 lead and conceded five goals.
The honour of the Premier League must be saved by last year’s semi-finalist, Manchester City. Pep Guardiola’s team will play Leipzig on Wednesday and are huge favourites.
Tottenham and Chelsea, however, are obviously not out of the game, after losing by the narrowest possible margin they have a home rematch. It will be worse with Liverpool, who are not much to reckon with anymore.
The Reds would have to win 3:0 at the Santiago Bernabéu to take the game to extra time, they would have to score four goals to go straight through. And given the leaky defence and the offensive strengths of Benzema or Vinícius, keeping a clean sheet is a much bigger task than scoring three goals.
The last time an English side reached the quarter-finals was the 2019/20 season. Back then, only Manchester City progressed from the eighth round via Real Madrid, Liverpool fell to Atlético Madrid, Tottenham fell to Leipzig and Chelsea crashed out to Bayern.
