Theend of the Chinese Super League project is imminent! Five years ago, this league wanted to become the best in the world, but it didn’t work out. The main idea was to bring in big names and, above all, overpay them. Now it could be the end of the line.
The Chinese Super League had plans to become the best football league in the world. A lot of fans despised the project. Traditional football supporters in particular were strongly opposed. Why?
The main idea behind the project was that Chinese football clubs would link their names with huge and wealthy corporations. Thanks to large sums of money, they will be able to bring star players to their teams.
It looked like most of the players heading to China were overpaid. The club received a large transfer sum and players signed fabulous contracts.
A lot of footballers heading from Europe to China were labelled as mercenaries. Oscar, Ezequiel Lavezzi, Hulk or even Carlos Tevez were lured by big money.
But there was a big problem. Big salaries have meant that clubs now have no money. The Chinese Super League is suspended. It hasn’t been played for three months. Because of the lack of money, they only train during the day to pay for the lights.
The coronavirus crisis must be a big factor in all this. The plan is to play football in China from December, but only six teams are licensed. We’ll see how it all turns out.
