The gates of the Champions League have closed, with Antwerp, PSV and Copenhagen the last to slip through. All four baskets are now clear ahead of today’s draw, which takes place at 6pm.
In the first basket we find the Champions League winners, the winners of the top six domestic competitions and the Europa League winners. With Manchester City winning both the Champions League and the Premier League, Feyenoord move into the first basket as the Eredivisie winner.
In addition to these two teams, the Europa League winner Sevilla is in the first basket, plus another Spanish team – Barcelona – who won La Liga. Then there is Napoli as Serie A winner, Bayern Munich as Bundesliga winner and PSG as Ligue 1 champion.
The second to fourth basket is already divided according to the UEFA coefficient for the last five years. Thus, in the second basket we find Real Madrid, Manchester United, Inter MIlán, Borussia Dortmund, Atlético Madrid, RB Leipzig, FC Porto and Arsenal.
In the third basket are Shakhtar, Salzburg, AC Milan, Braga, PSV, Lazio, Red Star Belgrade and Copenhagen.
The fourth basket then features Young Boys, Galatasaray, Real Sociedad, Celtic, Newcastle United, Union Berlin, Antwerp and Lens.
The draw will begin at 6pm on Thursday, with the first group matches scheduled for September 19 and 20. The schedule of duels will be announced on Saturday.
This is the last edition of the Champions League and we will see the traditional distribution into four groups. From next year’s edition, UEFA has opted for a new variant where each team will play 10 matches.
