Tuesday’s quarter-final between Chelsea and current champions Real Madrid was a long-awaited battle, but it brought a bit of controversy right from the start. The traditional Champions League anthem was not played at all before kick-off!
It was the third time in a row that the English-Spanish duo had faced each other. In the previous edition, it was Real who went on to win the competition. The season before, the same scenario repeated itself, only in reverse.
Los Blancos went into the double-header as the clear favourite given the current form of both teams. They confirmed this with a 2-0 win at home at the Santiago Bernabeu, leaving a big question mark over the rematch in London.
But the question mark was in the minds of probably everyone present not only in the stadium but also on the TV screens before the opening whistle. The traditional and now legendary Champions League jingle was not played at all!
It turned out that the person responsible for this soundscape in a stadium with a capacity of over 40 thousand forgot to press the “play” button. In all likelihood, someone else will fill this post in the future…
The pictures of the completely confused and surprised players of both teams gave a slightly comical impression. After all, it is not too surprising, given the really low probability of such a situation.
Even though the Champions League is one of the most prestigious sporting competitions ever, a similar miss can still happen. Moreover, to the surprise of most, this is not the first time this bizarre situation has occurred. Coincidentally, it happened again in the Islands.
In 2017, during the last group game at Old Trafford between Manchester United and CSKA Moscow, the staff there were also having a bad day. Instead of most of the stadium getting goosebumps, all they got was almost a minute’s silence.
” This is our last Champions League game for many years and they won’t even play the anthem for us, ” wrote a London supporter.
