Saturday’s Premier League football showpiece? Brighton welcome Newcastle to their home ground. It was expected to be an interesting battle, but the result was a one-sided win. It was delivered by 18-year-old phenom Evan Ferguson.
It was the 2021/22 season when Irish striker Evan Ferguson made his first ever Premier League appearance for Brighton. He only played a few minutes, but he was given the opportunity to sample the atmosphere of the best league in the world.
He had already been given more space in the previous season. He was still primarily a joker, but very useful. He started 25 games across all competitions, played just over 1,000 minutes and scored 10 goals, to which he also added 3 assists.
This season the 18 year old talent is getting even more space and rewarding himself with some great performances. After four rounds he has 4 goals. He shone the brightest on Saturday against a tough opponent. He basically single-handedly destroyed the dangerous Newcastle.
Ferguson netted a hat-trick for the Magpies. He scored the first goal from a set piece, the second from outside the opposition’s sixteen and the third after a cross from the edge of the Newcastle area.
It was the Irish striker’s first ever hat-trick in his professional career and in the Premier League and he is one of the youngest footballers to achieve it since 1992. He emulated the likes of Michel Owen, Robbie Fowler and Chris Bart-Williams.
Brighton can be glad the transfer window is over, otherwise they would probably have to worry about their next sensation. Ferguson has made a big impression on the footballing public.
Irish football fans and Irish journalists are particularly enthusiastic. For after a long time, Ireland has found someone who can truly represent this likeable nation at the best level in the world.
“He is so good! It’s an unusual situation for Ireland to have someone in that position,” said Irish journalist Dan McDonnell.
