The boss of Spanish football mocked Sevilla, Villarreal and Valencia. Their disallowed goal makes me feel good, laughs Rubiales
Spanish football has to deal with another big uproar. And it involves none other than, once again, the president of the Spanish Football Association, Luis Rubiales. This time, he’s taken a swipe at three La Liga clubs.
Spanish football has to deal with another big uproar. And it involves none other than, once again, the president of the Spanish Football Association, Luis Rubiales. This time, he’s taken a swipe at three La Liga clubs.
Luis Rubiales is the man on fire at the moment. The president of the RFEF (Spanish Royal Football Association) has previously faced a lot of pressure to resign when wiretaps came to light where he and Barcelona’s Gerard Pique were arranging to move the Super Cup to Saudi Arabia, earning big commissions.
Then Rubiales was ratted out by his own uncle, the former RFEF chief of staff, who claimed that Rubiales was ordering orgies with young girls paid for with Federation money.
Villarreal bothers me most of all
And now there’s another blemish on Rubiales’ reputation. The daily El Confidencial has come up with wiretaps in which the boss of Spanish football makes very unflattering comments about three clubs.
It all happened in 2020, when Sevilla played at the ground of Real Madrid. El Confidencial got hold of a conversation that Rubiales had with his father.
“Let’s see if we can brush these pretentious people off,” Rubiales wrote. “It’s the second team that bothers me the most, ” the RFEF boss added. Valencia and Sevilla, ” replied the father. “Hahaha. For me, in that order: Villarreal, Sevilla, Valencia, ” said Rubiales.
Sevilla did indeed lose the match to Real Madrid 1:2, but it was not without controversy. The VAR disallowed a very questionable goal by Luuk de Jong, which the Rubiales team had a lot of fun with and teased Sevilla president Pepe Castro about.
“And what do you have to say about Pepe Castro?” asked Luis. “That’s a chapter all by itself. With the arrogance of the Sevillians, they think they’re the best in the world. A fool. Let them have it!” his father replied. “Hahaha. The VAR is doing me good,” Rubiales Jr. praised the video referee’s questionable decision.
The clubs’ fencing
Of course, the three clubs in question don’t like that. Sevilla, Villarreal and Valencia have teamed up to issue a statement demanding an apology from Rubiales.
“Villarreal, Sevilla and Valencia jointly condemn the serious contempt from Luis Rubiales. Conversations in which the aforementioned speaks with disgust, contempt and arrogance towards our clubs are unacceptable from a person who has such power and should defend the interests of all Spanish clubs with the same standard,” the statement read.
“Villarreal, Sevilla and Valencia jointly condemn the lack of respect that Luis Rubiales has shown towards our organisations, but above all towards our fans. At the same time, we express our concern about the possible consequences his attitude could have for our clubs,” the three leading La Liga clubs wrote.
“Villarreal, Sevilla and Valencia ask Luis Rubiales to make amends and ask for a public apology to all three clubs and their fans,” the statement concludes.
Fans of all three clubs have united to publicly protest against Rubiales. That, by the way, is almost all of Spain at the moment, you will find few Rubiales supporters. The fans also claim that the demand for an apology is insufficient, the clubs should push for Rubiales’ resignation.
