Athletic Bilbao are not leaving. The club’s philosophy is to bring up its own offspring and only play with them at the highest level. Of course, now and then a transfer will come along, like Kepa Arrizalabaga or Aymeric Laporte, but otherwise most players will remain loyal to the Basque club for almost their entire career.

This will probably not be the case with Nico Williams. Indeed, the younger of the brothers shows great potential and has been playing more or less regularly for the Spanish national team since 2022.

He is also very lively right now. His contract expires in the summer and although Athletic are constantly trying to extend it, Williams is not yet ready to do so.

Logically, he is attracting interest from other teams. Barcelona were the first to circle around the Pamplona native, but their financial situation didn’t allow them to try to transfer the player, as his buyout clause is 50 million euros.

However, four big Premier League teams are also interested (Manchester City and Liverpool among them) and, according to Diario AS, Real Madrid are also newly interested. Williams’ wish, however, should be to stay in Spain, sending the shares of the two giants soaring.

The problem, however, is that they won’t get the 21-year-old talent for free. In fact, Nico Williams has made it clear that he has such respect for Athletic that he will not leave without the club earning anything from him. Thus, he insists on a contract extension, adding that the current €50 million clause will not be lifted. Athletic would love to increase it.

“The fact that clubs like Barcelona, Real Madrid or clubs from England are interested in you means that I am doing my job well. I’ve already decided what I’m going to do, but that remains to be seen, for now I’m calm,” he told Periódico de España.
