The biggest sensation of the championship! Canada lost a five-goal lead to Austria! How did our neighbours make history?

Six goals, the most ever, were scored by Austrian hockey players in Canada. Still, it wasn’t enough to win and they fell 7:6 in overtime. This was also because the star Connor Bedard scored again in the favourite’s jersey.

So far, the flawless and highly favored Canada and the zero-ranked Austria met in another duel of the “Czech” Group A of the Hockey World Championship. And it was far from a sensation. But the Maple Leafs triumphed in overtime and lead the group.

The Canadian hockey team was after the win from the beginning, but it was not enough to get three points. At 9:21 they were already up 2:0 after goals by Cozens and Guhle. Then Nissner reduced the deficit, but Buffalo’s defenseman Byram gave the two-goal difference back to the overseas team.

Andre Tourigny’s men also managed to win the second period by three goals. McCann, Bedard and Los Angeles goal scorer Pierre-Luc Dubois got the puck behind David Madlener for his second goal of the tournament.

Canada lost the lead 6:1

However, the last act of the game took a completely different course than expected. The Austrians managed to score two goals in 54 seconds and reduced the score to 6:3. First, Schneider assisted Baumgarner, only for the Salzburg striker to assert himself moments later.

And when Dominic Zwerger scored from long range at 50:41, Canada started to get nervous. Schneider again reduced the gap to a single goal. Eleven goals may have been expected in this game, but certainly not at this rate.

And that was not all. The Austrians managed to tie the score at 6:6 with 49 seconds left. Marco Rossi was the scorer of the literally historic goal. Historic because six goals have never been scored by the Austrians against Canada. It went to overtime.

But it was quickly decided by Toronto’s experienced forward John Tavares. The players with the maple leaf on their chest had great difficulty in defending another triumph and are first in the Group A table. Their next opponent will be Norway. Austria will face another hockey giant on Thursday – Finland.
