The biggest point gap in the Ballon d’Or? Definitely the goalkeepers!
The Ballon d’Or for 2021 was awarded to Lionel Messi. But we’ll be more concerned with the goalkeeper award. This is where the biggest points gap in the entire Ballon d’Or ceremony was. Who was the winner and by how many points?
The Ballon d’Or for 2021 was awarded to Lionel Messi. But we’ll be more concerned with the goalkeeper award. This is where the biggest points gap in the entire Ballon d’Or ceremony was. Who was the winner and by how many points?
As we have already outlined, the coronation of Lionel Messi took place, on the one hand it is a huge sensation and another rewriting of the football textbooks, on the other a large part of the public is losing confidence in this prestigious poll.
Last year Robert Lewandowski was supposed to win the Ballon d’Or, but France Football did not give the award due to the pandemic and cancelled the whole ceremony. This time around, many expected that after another incredible season for the Polish sniper, perhaps justice would finally prevail.
But once again the footballing public knelt before the football magician from Argentina! Messi thus won his 7th Ballon d’Or and symbolically lit up the Eiffel Tower.
But now for the goalkeeper award. The so-called Yashin Trophy (named after Lev Yashin) has only been awarded since 2019. As it is also organised by France Football, it was not awarded in 2020 either.
This year’s winner is therefore only the second ever winner of the award. In 2019, the award went to Brazilian goalkeeper Alisson (Liverpool FC).
This year, the winner was Italian goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma (PSG). At 22, he was a central figure in the national team at the Euro, where he saved the final penalty shootout against England.
Second in the poll was Édouard Mendy (Chelsea). The gap between Donnarumma and second-placed Mendy was the biggest in all the polls, 190 votes to be precise! Slovenian goalkeeper Jan Oblak (Atlético Madrid) finished in bronze position.
