The Spanish U21 team will not let the opening half of the European Championship go to waste. It was crowned by a missed chance by captain Ruiz, who committed a completely reprehensible miss!

The team from the Iberian Peninsula opened this year’s U21 European Championship with a duel against the home team Romania. They are co-hosting the tournament with Georgia.

Just like the Georgians, who sensationally overcame the Portuguese national team in the opening match, coach Sandoia’s team wanted to shine in their debut performance.

In the first half, they held a scoreless 0:0 scoreline, but it was mostly due to the shooting misery of the Spanish national team.

The team took a total of 9 shots in the first 45 minutes, but none of them hit the space between the three posts.

The most active player on the green field was striker Rodri, who created one chance after another for himself and especially for his teammates.

It was no different in the final minutes of the first half, when the Real Betis forward served up a golden goal opportunity to captain Abel Ruiz.

Paradoxically, it was the Spanish team’s top scorer who made a disastrous throw away. Ruiz was unable to get the ball into the completely open net from less than 3 metres away!

Instead of celebrating the goal, hugging the net was all Ruiz could do. A situation that his employers from Braga, Portugal, certainly don’t like to see.

However, the Spaniards were able to translate their dominance into goals in the second half, confirming their role as clear favourites, unlike their Portuguese neighbours.

The final result was a 3-0 victory after goals from Álex Baena, Juan Miranda and Sergio Gomez.
