Hockey championship in the Czech Republic has already offered a number of beautiful goals, but this one in the net of Great Britain is really worth watching. It was a showpiece. It gave the Danes an important win, while the island team is heading for relegation.

The Danish hockey team recorded their second win at this year’s world championship on Friday after beating Great Britain 4-3. The latter went into the game with a better start and led after a goal by Liam Kirk, but their opponents quickly responded.

At 6:26 the Danes equalised and it was quite possibly one of the best goals of the championship so far. Mikkel Aagaard, the twenty-eight-year-old forward of Sweden’s Modo, rejoiced. But the credit for the equalising goal went to the entire second five.

Bruggisser played the puck from deep in his own zone for Olesen to take. The Swedish Oskarshamn forward immediately distributed the puck to Molgaard, who turned it around and returned it in front of the net. British goalie Whistle was then beaten by Aagaard.

Are the Brits headed for relegation?

The whole action was further affected by poor British substitutions. It’s details like this that bring down an otherwise sympathetic performance from the World Cup newcomer. After four games, the island team is still without a point and the vision of staying in the elite division is receding.

“The British deserve credit. They fought and held on tooth and nail throughout the match. Right from the first ball it was clear that there was a lot at stake for both teams. A lot for us, but even more for them,” Danish defender Oliver Lauridsen told Czech TV.

“It was a great performance from us. To come up with a performance like that after the previous three games, which were very tough, was really great from everyone on the team. But now the defeat is really upsetting for us. Wewere close and had our chances,” said Mark Richardson.

While the win will give the Danes some peace of mind, the Brits will have a lot of work to do in the remaining championship programme. Their opponents will be the Czech Republic, followed by the Norwegians and then Austria, who have been playing well in the tournament, in the final clash.
