UFC boss Dana White faced questions from fans recently and had to answer a question that wasn’t easy. White was tasked with picking the best MMA fighter in history. He even listed his top five in UFC history.
The best fighter in history? Two names in particular often come up during this query. Jon Jones and Khabib Nurmagomedov. The number of title defenses, which is a record in the UFC, plays in favor of the former.
And how does Dana White, the head of the UFC, see it? “Jon Jones will probably fight at heavyweight later this year. Whatever you think of him, it’s hard not to consider him the best fighter of all time,” he opined to GQ Sports.
Khabib Nurmagomedov doesn’t deserve “GOAT” status for obvious reasons, he said. “Obviously he was talented enough to do it, but he retired too soon. Who knows what he could have achieved. Look what he did to Gaethje before his end,” White added.
Besides, he recalled that he tried to get Khabib to not retire or come out of retirement. Only, as we all know, his efforts ended in failure.
To make matters worse, White was asked what five fighters who have come through the UFC he thinks are the best. And that answer didn’t take him very long. Rather surprisingly, Nurmagomedov is the one missing from the top five.
In the top spot, White mentioned Jon Jones. Afterwards, he named Anderson Silva, Ronda Rousey, Conor McGregor and Georges St. Pierre. Kamaru Usman earned a special mention.
