The best duo in Premier League history? Kane and Son set a new record!
When Son Heung-min increased the score to 4:0 in Saturday’s game against Leeds, his goal didn’t make much difference, the match was long since decided. Still, it was an important goal, as Harry Kane crossed it in and the two strikers became the most productive duo in Premier League history.
When Son Heung-min increased the score to 4:0 in Saturday’s game against Leeds, his goal didn’t make much difference, the game had long been decided. Still, it was an important goal, as Harry Kane crossed it in and the two strikers became the most productive duo in Premier League history.
Kane and Son are undoubtedly Tottenham’s biggest weapons, as they have been proving for several seasons now. Both are very productive and have a great understanding on the pitch, which is proven by the statistics.
Against Leeds, it was after 37th minute that they passed to each other for a goal, breaking the previous record of the legendary Chelsea duo Lampard – Drogba.
And a great goal it was. Kane sent a precise pass to Son from his own half, the South Korean striker worked it perfectly and made no mistake in finishing.
Kane and Son have been playing together since 2015, when the latter joined Tottenham from Bayer Leverkusen. Since then, they have played more and more season after season.
They were most successful last season when Son passed to Kane for a goal five times, Kane in turn assisted his partner nine times! Southampton could tell a story about their collaboration.
Tottenham crushed Saints 5:2 last season and Kane assisted Son for 4 goals. They haven’t got to that form this season, but they continue to play well and enjoy it.
“We’ve been playing together for a long, long time and we understand each other’s game well. When I drop back for the ball, Sonny knows where to run and then I can send it on target, as you could see today,” Kane told BT sports in a post-match interview.
In the ranking of the pairs with the most goal scoring combinations, the roles of goal scorer and passer are usually clearly defined, such as in the case of Drogba and Lampard, where Drogba scored 67% of the goals, or Aguero and Silva, where Aguero scored 72% of the goals.
In contrast, Kane and Son have almost evenly distributed their roles – Kane scored 51% of the goals, Son 49%.
There is no doubt that these two are among the top of the Premier League, breaking the record of Lampard and Drogba only confirms it. However, unlike them, and indeed the other duos in the rankings below them, they are missing something – trophies.
It has come close a few times – the 2019 Champions League final, for example – but so far it has never worked out. Even this year, Spurs’ season has not played out as expected, the only real chance to win a trophy at the moment is the FA Cup, where Conte’s charges are waiting for the eighth-final against Middlesbrough on March 1.
