The Belgian league match between Genk and Anderlecht in December will be replayed due to a video referee error. The decision was made by the disciplinary committee after a protest by the first-named team. The goal that was disallowed by VAR was scored by Yira Sor.
Just before Christmas, namely on 23 December last year, the match of the 19th round of the Belgian Jupiler Pro League between Anderlecht and Genk took place. The home team eventually won 2-1, but thanks to the video referee disallowing the visitors’ goal from the 24th minute.
In the 23rd minute, Genk took a penalty kick, which was not converted by Bryan Heynen. Yira Sor, a former player of Slavia Prague, scored from the rebound.
However, this goal came under the video referee’s scrutiny after a few moments. The referee disallowed the Nigerian striker’s goal because Sor ran into the penalty area too early.
The visiting team protested the referee’s decision on the pitch, but it did them no good. Genk thus lodged an official complaint after the 1: 2 defeat, the subject of which was the video referee’s incorrect assessment of the situation.
As the footage shows, Sor had indeed run into the penalty area a little earlier, but so had two Anderlecht players.
The match will be replayed, VAR made the wrong decision
The disciplinary committee, after Genk lodged an official complaint about the result of the match, reviewed the situation and finally made a clear decision. The match between Anderlecht and Genk will be replayed, the disciplinary committee thus decided in favour of the visitors.
According to the correct procedure, the referee should have ordered a penalty replay after two Anderlecht players ran into the penalty area early on. However, referee Nathan Verboomen did no such thing.
Genk then scored in the second half when Alieu Fadera scored in the 70th minute. However, twenty-three-year-old Belgian Theo Leoni equalised four minutes later. Anders Dreyer scored in stoppage time in the second half to give the home side the win.
