The best golfers in the world have had a holiday weekend in the form of the Ryder Cup. At the Whistling Straits Golf Course in Wisconsin, USA, the home team literally crushed the European team 19:9.
After last year’s postponement caused by the coronavirus pandemic, the Ryder Cup returned with the number 43 in full force and with spectators on the course. The paper favourite before the tournament was Team USA, who lived up to expectations by dominating from the start.
After two days of play, America led 11:5. For a big turnaround, a literal miracle would have had to occur alongside the complete collapse of the USA players, which did not happen. Even on Sunday, the home golfers were a class better, and managed to defend the famous trophy by a crushing 19::9 on points.
Such a tall victory is the largest margin of victory in the modern Ryder Cup era. The absolute star of the United States was Dustin Johnson. He played a total of five mini-matches, but managed to win all of them and contributed greatly to the victory.
The captain of the winning team , Steve Stricker, gushed after the triumph about the reasons why the Americans were able to win so clearly. He highlighted the team spirit, specifically mentioning the pre-tournament feud between Bryson DeChambeau and Brooks Koepka.
The two are not exactly fond of each other on the PGA circuit, yet they managed to pull together at the Ryder Cup. “We had a mission ahead of us and you could see that all the players took it in stride. Even Brooks and Bryson put aside their feud and were willing to play together. This is a new era of golf in the USA,” Stricker reported with a smile after the triumph.
Tiger Woods also reportedly helped the Americans to victory. Although he was unable to make it to the venue due to rehabilitation from a serious car accident in February, he kept in touch with the U.S. captain throughout and supported his friends.
“He not only wished everyone the best of luck, but also shared some personal insights with the players. It’s great that he reached out and gave all the guys courage,” praised the Team USA captain. He nominated six newcomers to the home team roster this year.
