The ageless Buffon has extended his contract with Parma!
The legendary goalkeeper simply hasn’t thought about retirement yet. He has signed a contract until 2024 with the club where he started his football career in the early 1990s.
The legendary goalkeeper simply hasn’t thought about retirement yet. He has signed a contract until 2024 with the club where he started his football career in the early 1990s.
He has been with Parma since 1991, when he started in the youth teams. In 2001, he left for Juventus, where he stayed until last season (except for the 2017/18 season, when he bounced to PSG).
Then, during last summer, he announced his return to second division side Parma. And between the sticks, he has become the undisputed number one, appearing in 23 games in Serie B so far, netting 23 goals and keeping 8 clean sheets.
Although injury ruled him out for 3 games in mid-February, he was back in goal on Saturday and contributed to the 4-0 win over Spal.
At Monday’s press conference, club president Kyle Krause announced that the legendary goalkeeper has extended his contract until 2024, when he will be a whopping 46 years old.
Buffon himself did not hide his excitement after the signing. “This is a great day for me and my family. I hope it will also make the fans happy, as I have always had a strong bond with them and the whole city,” the Italian football icon told the club’s website.
“By extending my contract I also want to express that I believe in what we are trying to do here. We have an interesting challenge ahead of us and a plan that we are slowly following. I am optimistic about the future of Parma.”
Parma were relegated to Serie B last season after 3 seasons in Italy’s top competition and are currently attempting to return to the elite.
However, that is not going so well, the Gialloblu are in 13th place after 26 games – 9 points away from both the play-offs and the relegation zone. However, the season is not over yet, there are still 12 games ahead of Buffon and his teammates in which they can try to collect important points and fight for the playoffs.
